Thought Analyser
There’s no doubt that the way you think about things affects the way you feel (and subsequently, how you cope). Thought analyser, therefore, is designed to help you become more aware of your thoughts and then, to help you identify which of your thoughts are helpful and which are not. Once you’ve identified the unhelpful thoughts Thought Analyser will help you challenge these and ultimately, develop more helpful ones.
So, to make the most of Thought Analyser:
- write down what ever thoughts go through your mind several times each day (especially if you’re feeling down or stressed or anxious)
- at the same time, describe what was going on around you when you had these thoughts (e.g. the situation you were in, what you were doing and who you were with)
- as best you can, note also how you were feeling and feel free to record more than one emotion or feeling
- Next, review the list of “distortions” or “thinking mistakes” and contemplate wether or not you made one (or more) of these mistakes)
- If your thinking was, in some way, distorted, then try to correct it by generating a more helpful and realistic way of thinking about that specific situation
- Finally, reflect on how you feel having re-thought the situation (e.g. do you feel any less distressed?)
The thought analyser will assist you in all these steps, record the results and allow you to review them at any time.
